Kids bedrooms – Tips and Tricks for Kids Decor on a budget

I love browsing on pinterest for ideas for DIY projects or decorating , I am a big believer in just trying out something and see what happens ha ha ! My long suffering husband quite often comes home to be met with a paintbrush or spray can in hand or listens to some idea I might have and is honest when he says “I can’t vision what you are planning ” but more often than not will love what I have done after ! I love DIY and crafting and though I may not be the best , I do learn loads from it – I also love kids decor and love cosy , fun rooms for kids – Noah absolutely loves his new room and spends way more time in there now that I have made it more grown up for him !

I have some simple tips and tricks that I have learnt along the way and things that I do 🙂

1.Pinterest

Pinterest is the best place to go for any idea you might have , you can search by room , colour , theme etc I have found some amazing ideas from here and I just adapt them to suit what I need at the time !

2. Recycle / upcycle

I always think that if you want to save money but make a change in your kids rooms then up cycling is the best idea – I recently painted a small bookshelf in Noah room in chalk board paint , the difference was immense and all for the price of the paint – You can change handles on wardrobes and presses ( make your own using cars or dinosaurs !) relatively cheaply , turn an old unused bench into a toy chest with a lick of paint and some stencils – The potential is endless really ! I would advise you to follow @vintagekat @joannecondon @ dainty dresses or @thetwodarlings as they are the DIY / Upcycling queens !!!

3. Colour Theme

Always pick your colour theme before you start , for example I knew that I wanted black and mustard for Noahs room and Dusky pink with gold for the twins room ( We did a room swop ha ha )

4. Shop Around

I always keep an eye out for anything that I think would suit projects that I am completing or room decor , I have found some fab stuff in very random places – I know I harp on a lot about buying Irish but I am also a realist and I know that we can only buy what we can afford , so I quite often get decorative pieces from WISH ! Penneys , TK MAXX and Dunnes quite often have fab pieces as do Sostrene Greene and Flying Tiger – Remember , you can also paint something you buy or change something out in it – you can add fringing to a lampshade or beading to a cushion cover 😉

5.Splurge on the big ticket items and save on the accessories

I always try and set a rough budget for any project – Budgets are very personal as we all have very different ideas on how much is ok to spend on a kids room , I would say try and keep a small budget for accessories as kids will change their minds on what they like and don’t like pretty quickly , there love of Batman will fade quicker than you think ! Personally , I feel that most of your budget should be spent on big ticket items like beds , mattresses , wardrobes , these items should last you years ! I use removable stickers  for the walls ( You can get these cheaply from WISH ) and command strips for pictures  , this allows for quick and easy changes when the time comes .

6. Splashes of colour

A great way to change up a room is by adding a splash of colour – I tend to do this by adding colourful curtains and lampshades – you can add rugs , cushions , bed clothes quite easily and cheaply .

7.Wall prints

Wall prints are such a nice idea for changing up the walls – You can get amazing ones from Easy ( Some are printable so a lot cheaper ) or you can easily create your own

9. Crafting

If you are into crafting then you will just easily knock something up for the walls ha ha  but it is possible to create something personal  easily for any room , I did a very simple wall hanging for the twins room , so cheap and easy to do !

11.Room that will grow with them

The most important thing is that if you are spending money on a Childs room then you should try and ensure that it will grow with them , when choosing Noahs bed I made sure it had a desk built in for when he is older and doing home work , I also chose a colour scheme that will grow with him and I stayed away from adding characters too the furniture or walls ( Batman etc ) – So hopefully his room will last him for many years in its Current guise .

I really hope this has helped you ,

L xx
